HP EliteBook Folio 1040 G1 disassembly and SSD, RAM, HDD upgrade options

In this guide, I’ll explain how to disassemble HP EliteBook Folio 1040 G1 to remove and replace the battery, SSD, wireless card, RAM, heat sink, cooling fan and motherboard.

Remove all screws from the bottom case.
Pry up and remove the bottom case.

When the bottom case removed, you can get access to the battery, SSD, wireless card, RAM, heat sink, cooling fan, speakers, CMOS battery and motherboard.

Remove six screws securing the battery and disconnect the battery connector from the motherboard. You can remove the battery.

It features an 11.1V, 42WH Li-ion battery. HP P/N: 722236-1C1, HSTNN-W02C.

Remove the RAM.

The laptop features an Sk Hynix memory.

Disconnect two antenna cables and remove one screw securing the wireless card. You can remove the wireless card.

HP EliteBook Folio 1040 G1 comes with Intel Dual Band Wireless-N 7260 wireless card. HP P/N: 717379-001.

Remove one screw securing the SSD and take it out from M.2 NGFF slot.

The laptop features Intel 180GB M.2 SSD, HP P/N: 729661-001.

Remove all screws securing the heat sink and cooling fan and disconnect cooling fan cable from the motherboard.

HP EliteBook Folio 1040 G1 comes with two cooling fans. They attached to one heat sink.

  1. Thanks for this disassembly. Sometimes I hear some rattling noise produced by the cooling fan at the side of the kensington lock. Do I loose my warranty if I open up my elitebook and check if there’s some dirt into the cooling fan?

    1. Hi, do not open, wont change anything, I asked warranty to change it, they said it is common issue and changed it, but when I load up cpu with work, it starts to rattle again.

      1. Hi! could you tell me the type of memory that you used with this notebook. I’d like buy another but I fail with many sticks.
        do you know the model correct, vendor … like this one H5TC4GB3AFR…..
        My notebook has 4gb solded and another empty I want put another stick 4GB or 8GB but I donĀ“t know the model correct. I just know that type is PC3L 12800 CL11

          1. It is not enough to know type.
            I’ve bought SODIMM Kingston HyperX Impact [HX316LS9IB/4]. So, it is DDR3L 1600MHz. But it doesn’t work – black screen on boot(before HP logo).
            RAM for this computer MUST be one-sided. But it is hard to find.

    1. I have yet to find an 8gb module, I did find 4gb modules and 2gb modules the part numbers are 747221-005 and HMT425S6CFR6A-PB respectively, I hope this helps, took me all night to find any single sided memory for sale as i’m looking for it for my 1040g1 also.

    Once the other parts have been removed how does one remove the motherboard?
    Does it just lift off or are there other screws etc.

  3. I have hp folio 1040 g1. MY SATA CONNECTOR BECAME LOOSE. i am looking way to fix this. Is there any other slot for hard disk? I see in the battery there is a square. Not sure what it is for?

    Is there any way I can fix this problem? Pls help. I want to either fix the slot or install a second hard drive. Is it possible?
