Lenovo ThinkPad T400 Disassembly (Clean Cooling Fan, Remove Keyboard)

In this guide, I will explain how to disassemble the Lenovo ThinkPad T400 to remove the hard drive, DVD drive, RAM, keyboard, palm rest, wireless card, motherboard, heat sink, and cooling fan.

Turn off your laptop. Unlock and remove the battery.
Remove the six marked screws from the bottom case.

Unlock the DVD drive switch and pull out the DVD drive.

Pry up the palm rest with your fingernails. Of course, you can also use a pry tool to lift the palm rest.

Disconnect the touchpad cable and remove the palm rest.

Lift the keyboard and disconnect the keyboard cable from the motherboard.
Remove the Thinkpad T400 keyboard.

Remove the keyboard bezel.

Remove the two screws and unplug the fan cable from the motherboard. You can remove the speaker.

Remove the five blue screws to remove the big metal plate.
Remove the three yellow screws and remove the little metal plate.
Remove the three red screws securing the heat sink.
Remove the three screws securing the heat sink

Disconnect the cooling fan cable from the motherboard.
Disconnect the cooling fan cable

The T400 cooling system has been removed.
Remove the cooling system

Remove the cooling fan from the heat sink.
Remove the cooling fan

Clean the cooling fan with a brush.

Apply lubricating oil to the cooling fan roller.
Apply lubricating oil to the cooling fan roller

Clean the old thermal grease and apply new thermal grease on the CPU and GPU.
