Today, many people prefer to play games on their laptops, which is why we are seeing an increasing number of laptops designed for gaming. The competition for gaming laptops is also getting tougher by the day. Famous computer manufacturers such as Acer, ASUS, HP, Dell, and MSI are now heavily invested in gaming laptops.
Recently, during the Chinese New Year, many manufacturers have launched new gaming laptops with great discounts. The gaming laptop we decided to review today was also released a few days ago and is called HP Omen 16 (2022 model). The new Omen 16 2022 comes with an Intel Core 12th Gen CPU and an NVIDIA RTX 3000 series GPU.
The model we received for review comes with an Intel Core i7-12700H and an NVIDIA RTX 3070 Ti (model number 16-b1008TX). We’ll go into more detail about this laptop in the specifications sheet.

Design and Appearance
The Omen 16 2022 continues to follow the design of the HP Omen series. The body also shares many similarities with the 2021 model. In addition, most of the laptop is covered with a black metallic texture, which gives it a decent and restrained appearance.

The logo on the display casing remains the same, but it feels more distinctive, now in a gradient blue-green hue that highlights the gaming DNA. With the new hardware, the company still maintains the same weight and thinner body thickness.
In the display and keyboard area, the design is similar to its predecessor. The display measures 16.1 inches. Above the keyboard are speakers (courtesy of B&O), and there is some branding in the palm rest area. It can be said that HP has managed to maintain the overall aesthetics of the Omen series on this laptop.
Display
The HP Omen 16 2022 has a 16.1-inch IPS display that supports a higher 2K resolution and a 165Hz refresh rate. The 16:9 aspect ratio also helps the display provide a wider screen field of view and detailed visual rendering, which enhances immersion and significantly improves the gaming experience.

As we know, the display has high specifications. Therefore, we also expected a higher percentage of color gamut in our tests. After testing, we found that it has a 100% sRGB, 77% AdobeRGB, and 79% DCI-P3 color gamut. The average color accuracy ∆, E, is 1.03, which helps deliver accurate colors when rendering and performing graphic design. During testing, the measured brightness was 338.8 nits, which looks quite good for a gaming laptop. It is worth mentioning that the display is TUV Rheinland and eye-safe display certified, and also supports DC dimming. All these factors ensure that long gaming sessions do not affect the user’s eyes.
Keyboard and TouchPad
The HP Omen 16 (2022) has a full-size keyboard, which is one of the most eye-catching things about the HP Omen 16 (2022). The keys are well spaced and have good elastic feedback. Both of these features create a premium keyboard experience. The numeric keypad brings convenience to gamers’ daily use.
Ports
Surprisingly, when comparing this model to its predecessor, we found every port in the same location as the 2021 HP Omen 16. We see two USB Type-A 3.0 ports on the right side of the body.

The left side has a fair number of ports. Starting at the top, there is a charging port, an RJ45 port, a USB Type-A 3.0 port, a miniDP port, an HDMI 2.1 port, and a USB Type-C port. Then, a 3.5mm headphone jack and an SD card reader have also been placed a little further away.
All the devices we use daily can be easily connected to this gaming laptop, and there is no need for an additional USB dock at all.
RAM and SSD
The new HP Omen 16 2022 is equipped with two 8GB DDR5 memory modules (at 4800MHz). It is worth mentioning that last year’s model used DDR4 memory. We used AIDA64 to test its performance. Its read speed was 63,366 MB/s, write speed was 58,459 MB/s, and copy speed was 55,408 MB/s.
Compared to the previous generation module, we found that read and write speeds have increased by around 50%, while copy speeds have increased by 60%. The latency rate is slightly higher than last year’s DDR4 memory. However, the overall performance has improved.
The new HP Omen 16 (2022) comes with a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD manufactured by Western Digital (Model: SN810). In addition to the SSD, the laptop comes with 32GB of Intel Optane memory. To test the SSD, we used the CrystalDiskMark software (version 8.0.4).
The test results showed a read speed of 6,584 MB/s and a write speed of 5,199 MB/s. The 4K random read and write speeds were 69 MB/s and 172 MB/s, respectively. In conclusion, we can say that the SSD in the HP Omen 16 (2022) performs better than the average PCIe 4.0 SSD laptops. The 12th-generation Core i7 processor also played a crucial role in achieving these high scores.
Battery and Charging
The new HP Omen 16 (2022) comes with an 83Wh lithium-ion polymer battery. The company provides a 230W AC adapter in the retail box, which can charge the battery to 50% in just 45 minutes. The charging power has been increased compared to last year’s model. However, the battery capacity remains the same.
CPU and GPU
The 12th Gen Core i7-12700H CPU is a key highlight of the new HP Omen 16 2022. The chipset has 14 cores and 20 threads。
In addition to the 12th Gen Intel Core i7 CPU, the laptop is also equipped with the NVIDIA RTX 3070 Ti mobile GPU. The GPU supports Max-Q technology and Dynamic Enhancement 2.0.
CPU Testing
After a brief introduction of CPU and GPU, it’s time for CPU benchmark testing. The following are the conducted tests:
- CPU-Z: 668.7 points on single-core and 7365.2 points on multi-core
- Cinebench R15: 258cb on single-core and 2746cb on multi-core
- Cinebench R20: 682cb on single-core and 6663cb on multi-core
- Cinebench R23: 1785 points on single-core and 17862 points on multi-core
- Geekbench 5: 1635 single-core and 12264 multi-core
- 3DMark CPU: 985 on single thread, 1888 on 2-threads, 3309 on 4-threads, 5438 on 8-threads, 7291 on 16-threads, and 7770 on maximum (20) available threads
Compared to the Core i7-11800H CPU, the benchmark scores of the Core i7-12700H are relatively high.
GPU Testing
After the CPU’s turn, it’s time for the GPU benchmarks. Here are some of the benchmarks:
- 3DMark Time Spy: 10055 points in DirectX12 Mode
- 3DMark Port Royal: 6178 points
- 3DMark Extreme Test: 12391 points
After all these benchmark results, we found that the new Omen 16 (2022) can run almost all of today’s games at the highest graphics settings with a smooth experience of more than 50fps
Gaming Test
Being a gaming laptop, it was necessary to test some games on this laptop. We tested the following well-known games on this gaming laptop: “Rainbow Six: Siege” and “Cyberpunk 2077”.
Rainbow Six: Siege
The well-known game “Rainbow Six: Siege” does not require high hardware specifications, but since it is a shooting game, the higher the FPS, the better the gaming experience for the player. We tested the game in 2K (1440p) and Full HD (1080p) resolutions.
At 2K resolution (2560 x 1440), the average frame rate was 242 fps. When we set the resolution to Full HD (1920x1080p) in the same scene, the average frame rate was 291 fps. At the beginning of the test, the GPU’s temperature was around 72°C, while the highest temperature was 85°C.
Cyberpunk 2077
The last game we tested is the all-new “Cyberpunk 2077.” We set the graphics to the following settings for testing this game: the light pursuit mode was switched to super, the picture quality was set to the highest, and DLSS was set to Automatic. The beautiful and realistic video quality can be achieved through these settings, plus each detail will be fully displayed.
When testing the game on a 2K (2560 x 1440) resolution, the frame rates were around 55 fps. In contrast, on Full-HD resolution (1920 x 1080), the frame rates were stable at 78 fps. Thanks to the 165Hz refresh rate display, the entire gaming experience was silky smooth and pleasurable for the gamer.
Heat Dissipation and Stress Test
It is known that the new Intel 12th-generation CPUs offer improved performance, but also a corresponding increase in power consumption. This increase also poses a special challenge to the thermal design of laptops.

It is worth mentioning that the new HP Omen 16 (2022) uses almost the same cooling system as its predecessor model. The cooling system consists of a 12V three-phase motor, four dual 8mm heat pipes, and two low-noise fans. The blades and fluid-bearing materials complement each other to deliver low noise and large air volume.
We also performed stress tests on the CPU and GPU separately as detailed below:
CPU Stress Test
We used AIDA64 for the stress test. All cores were between 81°C and 89°C, while power consumption and frequency stabilized at 91.21 W and 2.75 GHz, respectively. Core temperatures were kept at reasonable levels during peak CPU performance.
GPU Stress Test
We tested with the Furmark application, setting the resolution to 2560 x 1440 and at the maximum power consumption of 114.06W, the GPU temperature was only 73°C.
CPU and GPU Combine Test
When testing both the CPU and GPU together, the CPU’s core temperature ranged from 83°C to 89°C, and the core frequency stabilized at 2.15 GHz. Meanwhile, the GPU’s temperature rose to 78°C. In addition, the power consumption of both reaches 55W (CPU) and 115W (GPU), respectively.
After these tests, it is clear that the cooling system of the HP Omen 16 (2022) is quite powerful and can easily maintain a low temperature.
Overall Test
For the final test, we used PCMark 10 Extended Mode, and the results are as follows:
- 9871 points for common basic functions, including web browsing, video calling, and application startup
- 9215 points for the Productivity Project test
- 11682 points for digital content creation, including video, photo editing, graphics rendering, and related stuff
- 19,296 points for the Gaming test
The higher score in the common basic function indicates that the laptop can easily perform all daily office tasks. While the Productivity Project test shows the CPU’s efficiency rate is high. The gaming score is also great. Being a gaming laptop, this is a must. Overall, we didn’t find any shortcomings in this test either.
Summary
Thanks to the new Core i7-12700H CPU, the HP Omen 16 (2022) has performed a lot better than its predecessor model. The RTX 3070 Ti GPU also significantly enhances the performance of the CPU. Both play an important role in creating a smoother gaming experience and responding quickly to AAA (3A) masterpieces. The DDR5 memory and PCIe 4.0 SSD effectively reduce system and software latency and improve overall smoothness. If you’re looking for a gaming laptop with an Intel 12th Gen CPU and an RTX 3000 Ti GPU, then the HP Omen 16 (2022) is the best choice on the market.
