HP Envy 17 Leap Motion disassembly and SSD, RAM, HDD Upgrade Options
In this guide, you will learn how to disassemble the HP Envy 17 Leap Motion to remove and replace various components, including the keyboard, hard drive, DVD drive, wireless card, cooling fan, bottom case, and motherboard.
Unlock and remove the battery.
The HP Envy 17 Leap Motion comes with a 62Wh Li-ion battery, HP part number: HSTNN-LB4O.
Remove the screw securing the service cover.
Insert a pry bar under the service cover and gently pry it open.
Remove the screw securing the optical drive.
Pull out the optical drive.
The HP Envy 17 Leap Motion features a Panasonic UJ8DB DVD burner.
Remove two hard drives by lifting up the black tab.
The HP Envy 17 Leap Motion comes with two HGST 1TB 7200 RPM hard drives.
Remove all screws from the bottom case. There are hidden screws under the rubber mats.
Insert a pry tool between the bottom cover and the palm rest, and carefully slide the pry tool to detach the bottom cover from the palm rest. Be careful not to damage the clips on the bottom cover.
Under the bottom case, you can access the RAM, heat sink, SSD, USB board, wireless card, and motherboard.
The memory modules on both sides will pop out automatically.
Remove the screw securing the wireless card, disconnect the two cables, and then remove the wireless card.
The laptop comes with an SK Hynix 8GB DDR3L-12800S memory module.

Remove the two screws securing the cooling fan. Remove all screws securing the heat sink.
Disconnect the cooling fan cable from the motherboard.
Remove the heat sink and cooling fan module.
Remove the two screws securing the SSD, then remove the SSD.
