Huawei: No plans to sell mobile phone business

On the afternoon of January 25, Huawei responded to rumors about selling its Mate and P series phones. Huawei stated that it has no plans to sell its mobile phone business and will continue to focus on building a high-end smartphone brand.

Recently, rumors suggest that Huawei will follow Honor’s approach by spinning off its entire consumer business unit to operate independently.

Some overseas media have reported that Huawei is in preliminary talks with an investment company supported by the Shanghai municipal government to discuss the sale of its high-end smartphone brands, the P series and Mate series. The report also claimed that Huawei has not made a final decision on the sale, and the negotiations may not succeed because it is still trying to manufacture its high-end Kirin chips.

Huawei responded that it has no plans to sell its mobile phone business. Huawei will continue to build a globally leading high-end smartphone brand and is committed to providing consumers with excellent products and services.

Due to the U.S. chip ban, Huawei’s self-developed Kirin chips have not been produced since the second half of 2020, and it is unable to purchase mobile chips from third-party suppliers. It can only rely on inventory to produce smartphones. This has led to difficulties in Huawei’s smartphone supply.

In November 2020, Huawei sold its Honor brand to Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology Co., Ltd. to circumvent U.S. sanctions. Recently, Honor CEO Zhao Ming revealed in a media interview that almost all suppliers have reached supply agreements with Honor, including Qualcomm and MediaTek.
