Dell Inspiron 14R 5421 Disassembly and RAM, HDD upgrade options

In this guide, I’ll explain how to disassemble Dell Inspiron 14R 5421 remove the hard drive, DVD drive, keyboard, palm rest, speakers, heat sink and cooling fan, motherboard. Refer to this guide. You can upgrade, repair and clean your Inspiron 14R 5421.

Unlock and remove the battery.

Remove one screw securing the service cover. Pry up the service cover.

Remove the service cover.

Under the cover, you can find the hard drive module, RAM and wireless card.

Remove the screw securing the DVD drive.
Pull out the DVD drive.

The spare ram slot.

Remove the hard drive module.
The laptop features a Seagate 500GB hard drive.

Remove the RAM.

Turn over your laptop. Pry up the keyboard.

Lift up the keyboard. You can get access to the keyboard cable.
Unlock and pull out the cable. You can remove the keyboard.

The keyboard

Remove all screws from the bottom case.
Remove the screws securing the palm rest.
Disconnect all cables from the motherboard.
Pry up the palm rest.

The palm rest has been removed.

Disconnect LCD cable, DC power jack, speaker cables and USB board cable.
Remove the screws securing the motherboard. You can remove the motherboard.

The motherboard has been removed.

Loosen five screws securing the heat sink. You can remove the heat sink and cooling fan.

The cooling fan comes from Foxconn.

  1. The screw that secures the DVD drive is incorrectly marked. The correct screw is left and slight up from the one you marked. Unfortunately, I broke off the DVD drive cover while attempting to remove it, now I have to buy a replacement. 🙁

    I appreciate the instructions you provided, but I am hoping the rest of the instructions are correct.

  2. Good morning, I need to improve the performance of my dell Dell Inspiron 14R 5421, I noticed in the previous answers that the processor cannot be improved. Do I need to know if I can improve RAM? Currently, it is 4 GB and a single channel.
